基本の規則
The actor complainingly traveled in Shikoku. The actor traveled complainingly in Shikoku. The actor traveled in Shikoku complainingly. 　　　　（変な文だ。）目的語がない場合は、ほとんどの副詞で上の三ヶ所に入れられる。でも基本的には動詞の後ろにくるのが自然らしい。目的語を持つ場合は、目的語の後ろにくる。基本的に副詞は動詞と目的語の間にはいれてはならない。しかし、目的語が特に長い場合は、目的語の前に置く事が許される。 to不定詞を修飾する場合は、toと動詞の間に置けないので、to+動詞の後ろ、目的語の前に置く事が許される、と教科書にかいてあった。でもgoogle検索(2007年７月）で英語サイトを検索したら　　　 "to directly observe " -site:.jp　：141000件　　　"to observe directly " -site:.jp 　: 76800件２倍の差がついた。教科書とgoogleがずれるってこと結構あって、悩むんだよなあ。実際、英語校閲でも前者にわざわざ直されたことがありました。なので、toと動詞の間もたぶんあり。受け身、助動詞の場合（We have noted、it is seenなど）はbe, haveの後に入る。　　Urecy et al. have recently pointed out that~. ただし、完了形の受け身の場合はどちらでもいいらしい。　　This fact has recently been pointed out by Urecy et al.. 　　This fact has been recently pointed out by Urecy et al.. どっちかというと後者の方が自然な気がしてたんですが、Googleで検索(2007年7月)したら、　　" has recently been "は3,890,000 件　　" has been recently "は2,070,000件で前者がちょっと勝ち。意外。でもまあ、どっちでもいいか。 be動詞+形容詞なら、be動詞のうしろ。　　It is really interesting. 次の副詞（ある特定の事に意識を集中させるような副詞）は文末には使えない。「頻度」と同様、動詞の前に置く。 only, particularly, also
頻度の副詞
回数、頻度、否定の副詞は動詞の直前に位置する。ただし、be動詞と助動詞の場合は、その直後 often, always, usually, constantly, also, almost, nearly, rarely, hardly（ほとんどない）。stronglyも I often go to the cinema. Norman Nature 447 (2007) 537. 　　　　　　Natureがありっていうのなら、ありかな。　　　Googleでもたっくさん引っ掛かるし(2007年7月で1,750,000件)。全体、「これこれという言い方はしない。」ってコメントって危険です。一般にいって、存在しない事の証明は不可能だし。「これこれはある」てのは安全なんだけど。以前よんだ英語学習本で、「fresh milkという言い方は英語にはない！」とおおいばりで書いている本がありました。根拠は、長いアメリカ生活でそんな言葉は聞いたことがないから、ですって。でも、もちろんそういう言い方は存在します。例えば、英国にはfresh milkとパックに印刷された牛乳がたっくさんうられていました。ですから、英語にはそういう言葉が存在します。アメリカにだってあっておかしくはないでしょう。その本の筆者は、「自分は知らない。故に、この世に存在しない」と判断したようです。相当ばかなやつです。これで思い出しましたが、平成5年ころによんだ英国旅行のガイドブックで、「イギリスはスコッチウィスキーの国だから、ビールみたいなヤンキーなものは飲まない！」って書いてる本がありました。この著者、ガイドブックを書いてはいるものの、英国に行ったことがないのが明らかです。英国のどんな田舎にいってもいやでもパブが目に付き、パブに入ってみればそこはビールをのむ場所だというのはすぐにわかりますから。細かいこといえば、スコッチはスコットランドだし。まあ、たいていの映画の評論記事は、映画をみないでかかれているようなものか。だから、全然内容がずれてる記事がときどきある。 Doing a thing well is often a waste of time. --- Robert Byrne One's real life is often the life that one does not lead. ---- Oscar Wilde, L'Envoi, An epigram often flashes light into regions where reason shines but dimly. ---- Edwin P. veryとmuchの違い：
veryは形容詞と副詞を、muchは動詞と句を修飾する（らしい）。 veryは現在分詞を、muchは過去分詞を修飾する（らしい） This behaviour is very interesting. The authors are much interested in the behaviour. ある教科書にこう書いてあったのですが、ネットで検索するとどうも違うみたいです。 Googleでの検索結果 " is very interesting ": 718,000件 " is much interesting ": 860件でも " is very interested in ":20100件 " is much interested in ":4030件結局、どっちもveryの勝ち。今は気にしなくていいってことか。ネットは便利だ。 If you are not criticized, you may not be doing much. ---- Donald H. Rumsfeld でも、sameのときは the very same：まったく同じ much the same：ほぼ同じで、意味が違う。the の位置も違うな。（でもmuch the sameってのは、私は聞いたことがないな。） This is the very first time.（まったく初めてだ。） This is my very first day to see a glacier. （氷河みるのは今日がはじめて）
enough
形容詞、副詞の直後におく。 The sample was large enough for neutron diffraction experiments とはいうものの、例文として適切なのか自信はない。っていうのは、否定的なニュアンスの文章で使うのが普通、と書いてあるのを読んだ事があるから。こういうパターンのときのenoughは量の境界値を意識していて、それをちょっと越えているという雰囲気らしい。「まあ、こんくらいでいいか」ってことかな。中性子実験なら試料は大きければ大きいほどいいから、本当の意味としてはおかしなことになっているかも。 Although the anealing process only marginally affects the effective electron-dopeing level, it is large enough to increase electron mobility and decrease the resistivity. 　　　H.J. Kang et al. , Nature Materials 6, (2007) 228. ほんの少ししか影響を与えないのだけれど、それでも易動度(electron mobility)や電気抵抗(resistivity.)を変化させるには十分。 Urecy studied hard enough to become a physicist. これは「物理屋にはなれる程度にそこそこ勉強した。」ってな雰囲気らしい。未確認だけど。（ニュアンスの違いを確認するのは難しいんだよなあ。）境界値のパターンなら、 He is old enough to smoke. 彼は二十歳すぎという意味。50代って事はない。実際、否定的な文章に多く使われているな。 Most peaple work just hard enough not to get fired, and get paid just enough money not to quit. as wellと,also
